This collection of mesmerising simulations were created exclusively for Hermes. Having seen Emty01’s knit simulations on Instagram the luxury design house contacted us with a proposal to devise similar looped films for them. The creative team gave us free rein to explore their archive with a view to select products that would be suitable for Emty01’s innovative approach to looped animations.
Emty01’s original knit loops may appear to be rather frivolous, but they were actually inspired by a paper written by Keenan Crane, the Digital Geometer and Associate Professor of Computer Science & Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Crane’s essay describes a set of closed-form expressions for creating curves (and orientations) which resemble a stockinette stitch, used in knitting.
Using this theory once more for two of the Hermes films he implemented this theory in Houdini. With so many possibilities available within the Hermes archive, Emty01 settled on their famed H Tissage and Avalon Vibration blankets as his inspiration. He began by experimenting with knitted patches to simulate the pattern of the blankets while making the knitting centre stage, as they knit and unknit themselves in a way that is both compelling and tactile.
For the looped Scarf ring he created an optical illusion whereby the ring turns inside out and back again in a mesmerising way that has viewers transfixed.
The collection represents the most complicated looped animations Matt has ever created, and who better to create them for than Hermes. To date these films have attracted 8.5 million views on Hermes’s Instagram page.
